Beaufort Networking
Description
We hope you will join us on Thursday, October 1 as Dr. Andy Beall discusses Santa Elena - Discover America's Lost Century.
Children born at Santa Elena in 1566 were 40 years old when Pocahontas met John Smith. European exploration, settlement, contact with Native American people, and conflict in America began in the early 16th Century. You may be surprised to find the focus of much activity was right here in Beaufort County in the area of the Port Royal Sound. Learn about the period between Columbus’ discovery of the New World and the first English settlement at Jamestown that to most people truly is a “Lost Century.” Learn about the incredible drama that involved Jean Ribault, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, Spain’s King Philip II, and Sir Francis Drake. Hear the history of the Native American named Juan Chicora who spun fantastic tales of riches, and the very real history of the Spanish settlement on Parris Island that began in 1566 and became the capital of all Spanish territories in modern-day United States.
This is a FREE networking opportunity for members.
