Description
Sweet Grass Baskets with Sarah Edwards-Hammond
Back by popular demand ! One of the Lowcountry favorites'. Now it's YOUR turn to learn how these beautiful pieces of functional art are created. While learning basic techniques and developing your own basketry skills, your instructor will guide you while also sharing the history and stories of the Lowcountry and Gullah Heritage. During this two-day workshop, several basketry techniques will be identified while students create their own basket using grasses and other natural found objects native to the Lowcountry. Class size is limited and all supplies are included.
Meet the Instructor:
Sarah Edwards-Hammond is one of Charleston's finest sweet grass basket artists. In her family, basket weaving is a technique that has been passed down for generations. Sarah has taught classes at the HGA Conference in Long Beach and schools all over South Carolina. She participated with the North Charleston Art Festival for the past 19 years, Clemson Rural Heritage, Charleston County Museum, Coastal Discovery Museum (Hilton Head), and Smithsonian Folklife Festival (July 2009). Sarah is proud to say that she has been an annual instructor at John C. Campbell Folk School, located in Brasstown, North Carolina for ten years.
